Scion of one of Europe's oldest extant monarchies, Prince Rainier III (born 1923) became the thirty-first ruler of Monaco in 1949. Rainier once said, according to a 1988 People magazine article.Rainier had surgery in December of 1999 to repari an aneurysm in his abdominal aorta. His surgical adventures continued when on February 2, 2000, doctors removed part of his lung in order to examine a small nodular growth. On February 12, 2000, after air was discovered escaping from a lung and building up in his chest cavity, Rainier was operated on again. The condition, called pneumothorax, is a disease that can cause partial or complete collapse of the lung if left untreated. After the surgery, doctors said Rainier was recovering satisfactorily.
