A Man For All Seasons Character Summary Cardinal Wolsley: Cardinal Wolsley was the Lord Chancellor of England during the opening parts of the play. Being Chancellor was a highly regarded position in the Roman Catholic Church in Britain and Wolsley was a highly intellectual man. He wanted to try and help the King by persuading the Pope to grant him the divorce. Half way during the play Wolsley was on his way to be tried
who was willing to do anything for the King to increase his status. Cromwell was in a way gifted as he was able to intimidate anyone he pleased. He was extremely jealous of Thomas More and he thus despises him and does everything in his power to relive him of his position. After the death of Thomas More, Cromwell becomes Chancellor of England, but ironically, is later found guilty of treason and is killed too.
