The Bulgers latter beats Candide for desertion and he becomes a beggar on the street, however Candide believes that this has happened for the good of all things. Thus the time Candide spends in the Barons castle and his run-ins with the Bulgers are prime examples of how the political attitude of the time influences the setting.
