Chekhov wants us to see the conflict between authority and freedom, as portrayed by two characters, Nikolai Ivanich and Ivan Ivanich. They are siblings who have differences of values, desires, and personality. Nikolai is a representative of authority while Ivan is a representative of freedom.

This story is written when Russia is under the rule of Czar Nicolas II and has a group of gentry, which is distinct group, and a group of peasants. The peasants are poor and not be able to have life with total freedom or political rights. From the perspective of Chekhov, every men should have their own freedom or rights to do anything; however, there are some groups of men not taking an advantage of opportunity to grasp joy of life.
