Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Psychological reading
The nature of addiction, is at best, difficult for many to understand. Not until recently, within the last 20 years, has addiction been recognized as an illness requiring intense treatment and therapy. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde , written by Robert Louis Stevenson, would be read today as an analysis of addiction. The behaviors examined in the story convey the psychological and physical affects associated with addiction such as, reasons for use, the
substance he consumes. Armed with few tools to understand his addiction, Dr. Jekyll sees his dependency as a person dealing with a conflicted personality, rather than a person caught in the vicious cycle of addiction. Fortunately, through the development of modern medical models of addiction, individuals like Dr. Jekyll are able to have a better chance of identifying, beating, and receiving treatment for this horrible illness. Had Jekyll lived today he might have been spared.
