…istence. Upon examining the life and actions of Cathy, it became apparent that she is representative of evil, and could be likened to the devil. John Steinbeck has produced a novel that includes many biblical archetypes and as a result contains many themes. Steinbeck was able to clearly develop these archetypes by using many characters that represented various biblical characters. Without the use of biblical imagery the themes of the novel would be very nebulous.
