Measure for Measure does not fit neatly into any of the genres of most of Shakespeare's other plays. Just looking at Isabella she could be played as a moral, religious character or a more feisty, confident character. It is left down to the director and actors to interpret and decide how each character should be portrayed. Overall there is a problem in the genre of the play but also in the genre of each character which is why Shakespeare's portrayal of character's links with the genre as a problem play.
