This book is tough to take as humorous yet its touching to look at racism in America, but Emily Mann's Having Our Say, manages to pull off the feat. Having Our Say really makes you think and try to somehow reflex on the past as if you were actually there. As a white male I amazed at how these two African American sister were able to live over a hundred years of racism and discrimination and then be able to write about their experience in showed first 85 words of 378 total

"Bessie brings laughter to the book with her honest, frank, and sometimes, confrontational take on life. Much of the humor arises from the interactions between the sisters because of there opposite personalities.
One quote that comes to mind, “one thing negroes learn early is how to laugh at their situation.” I think they used laughter as a way of coping with what was really anger and hate. In today’s society that is very true.
