INTRODUCTION
California's missions are an important part of our state's history. When the Spanish came to settle Alta California in 1769, they sent soldiers and friars to build missions. The Spanish came to California in search of gold, spices, and other riches. They also believed the American Indians should become Catholics so they built missions to convert the Indians to Christianity.
