The Duke and the King selfishly use deception to gain power and money while poor Jim is forced to use deception as a way to avoid the brutal life of a slave. Deception is practiced everywhere and everyday. Though it is almost always used selfishly, there are instances where deception is acceptable because it accomplishes a good purpose.
