The novel is set in A.F. 632, approximately seven centuries after the twentieth century. John gets caught up with the crowd and is wakes up the next day having taken soma and engaged in the sensual dance of the hymn. He is overwhelmed with guilt and self-hatred. That evening he is found dead in the lighthouse, hanging from an archway.
