The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The United States armed forces were at their highest state of readiness and Soviet field commanders in Cuba were prepared to use battlefield nuclear weapons to defend the island if it was invaded. Thinking of the people of his nation, Kennedy sensed that the U.S. public would support the removal of the missiles in Turkey. On the other hand, he did not want to appear to be surrendering to Khrushchev's demand. The United States could use more presidents like John F. Kennedy when it comes to solving world-wide crisis.
