His vengeful mentality is rooted in his jealously of Cassio, for being promoted to lieutenant and anger with Othello for promoting Cassio when Iago felt he was more qualified for the position. and revenge himself upon Othello for making Cassio lieutenant and for having a rumored affair with his wife, Emilia. Iago is an egotistical man whose self-esteem is hurt. His ability to conceal his true thoughts enables him to plot his revenge. I! ago has clear and focused motives and reasons for his actions.
