In 1618 John married Margaret Tyndal, and they had more children. In 1629 he was persuaded to move to Massachusetts and serve as the governor of the colony. In 1630 he led a fleet of eleven ships to the shores of New England and chose a site on a hilly peninsula in Massachusetts Bay, which the Puritans named Boston. He was elected governor sixteen times during the twenty-four years that he lived there.
