One of the major themes in “The Shipping News” is the search for respect, self-respect and happiness. How does Quoyle find these goals and succeed as a happy respected middle aged man.

Quoyle’s outlook at the beginning of the novel is very different to his outlook towards the end. Quoyle picked himself up, pushed himself towards his goals and succeeded in doing so, Quoyle can finally see a clear view of his future, his future makes him happy.
