…decided to fight Taft for the 1912 Republican nomination. Roosevelt was still extremely popular and won a majority of delegates. Taft, however, controlled the Republican party organization which made sure he was nominated. A part of the Republican party was angered by this and split off to begin the Progressive Party and made Roosevelt their nominee.
