…Ponce de Leon was shot with an arrow. He returned to Cuba to recover but eventually he died from his injuries. Between 1513 and 1563 the Spanish governments sent six expeditions to try and settle Florida. All the expeditions failed. In 1564 the French were able to establish a fort and colony on St. Johns River. The French threatened Spain's treasure fleets so King Phillip II sent Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles to be the governor of Florida
