A Typical Small Town Boy In John Updike’s “A&P”, Sammy is portrayed as a typical small-town boy growing up in the early sixties. He is from a little town north of Boston. He has a chauvinistic attitude towards women and is having a hard time dealing with the concept of responsibility. Both of which are characteristics of his immaturity. Sammy comes one step closer to being a man when be begins to accept
for his actions, even though he realizes that it is going to disappoint his parents. His stomach sinks as he walks away from the supermarket knowing that he has made his choices and now must live with them. Sammy has grown up somewhat and has taken a step into his manhood.
