A Long Day
In the play, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, written by Eugene O’Neill, one of the sons of Tyron, Edmund, is diagnosed with Tuberculosis. Tuberculosis, a sometimes crippling and deadly disease, is again on the rise and is appearing in both the developed and developing world. Today, it is the leading cause of deaths resulting from a single disease. As of now, it kills three million people a year and, if this trend continues,
contact with another person having active tuberculosis. For example, the person has to breathe the same air in which the person with active disease coughs or sneezes. Edmund is just one of the millions of victims claimed by the virus, Tuberculosis. The boy experienced these symptoms that were talked about, yet his mother just ignored them. In the future the virus will claim many more lives just like Edmund, if people continue to go untreated.
