They gave two to seven years labor, and the Virginia Company rewarded them with “freedom dues”, which were land, tools etc. The Chesapeake thrived on its second try, due to advancements in technology as well as intelligence. Tobacco was the crop of the century, and these settlers fully utilized it. Tobacco was money to them, and they became rich and successful, just like the whole Chesapeake colonies.
