This sympathy we feel for Walter is derived from his ambitions, his ambitions alone however, cannot carry him to his dreams. In the final scene with Mr. Lindner, it is the first time Walter says he doesn’t want money. This is Walter’s first act as a man, and his belated step into manhood.
