A Room With A View - personal observation
A common saying heard in today’s society is “don’t judge a book by its cover.” This is the exact opposite feeling from society in the early 1900’s. In the early 1900’s, it was expected that a woman of high class marry a man of image and wealth. The different ways in which a society observes an individual can cause that individual to break away from their true identity. In Forster’s A Room
not at all a nice person, Lucy was deceived by society as to what she truly wanted. The beliefs of different people led her to believe that love was not as important as the attainment of a common goal. The two extremes of social conformity, or personal observation, were shown in the characters of Cecil and George. Personal observation causes turmoil in Lucy’s life, which ultimately enables her to discover her own, true identity.
