The beliefs of different people led her to believe that love was not as important as the attainment of a common goal. The two extremes of social conformity, or personal observation, were shown in the characters of Cecil and George. Personal observation causes turmoil in Lucy’s life, which ultimately enables her to discover her own, true identity.
