A Tragedy or Not A Tragedy
A tragedy is a play, story, or other literary work, which arouses terror or pity by a series of misfortunes or sad events. The plot is usually about the downfall of a great man. Many take it a step farther and say that the main character or the person who experiences the downfall brings it upon himself because of some great flaw in his character. Maybe all this applies to tragedies written during the time
of life. Tragedy is a vague term that does not even come close to doing Shakespeare’s works justice. His plays are much more than just tragedies, or classical drama, even though they are traditional catastrophic plays. They deserve to have a separate genre. There is no way that these plays can be classified in any one category other than the magnificent works of Shakespeare. “Tragedies”, indeed, t not just “tragedies”, that is the answer.
