More nearly than any of his predecessors, Andrew Jackson was elected by popular vote; as President he sought to act as the direct representative of the common man. It is said the if Andrew’s friends would not have held him back he would have chased after the would be assassin with his cane. He lived, despite chronic sickness and a bullet in his chest, to be seventy-eight years old, and died peacefully at home on June 8, 1845.
