Araby
Immaturity Reminiscence There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the short story, Araby by James Joyce. This isn’t controversy dealing with various political issues or free speech or such associated things. It is of a more simple matter: whether the young boy in this story is capable of having a deep emotional realization at the conclusion of the story. It is obvious, in the final sentence of the story, that he does not
mind stories about how silly they used to act and what foolish mistakes they made when they were younger. The boy doesn’t have the advantage of the experiences that older people do. This young boy isn’t old enough to know the difference between things such as lust, love, the real world, and a boy’s fantasies. Adults have the benefit of learning from their many mistakes that were made in their childhood years.
