Araby setting analysis

In “Araby”, James Joyce creates the larger part of the setting of a late 1800’s or early 1900’s lower income neighborhood of an urban city. By establishing this setting, he sets a basis in which the rest of the story is to take place. To outline the characters and the plot of the story, Joyce uses the setting to mold his character’s niche, show the boy’s lifestyle, and create an escape from reality. …

…that it will be a mythological place that he can escape from reality and his harsh environment. He dreams about it in class, and cannot wait for his uncle to get home to give him the money to go. However, he is immediately brought down by the actual visit. Araby is nearly closed down with only a few stalls that are still open.
