Richard Wright, due to his surroundings, had to adapt and become independent early in his life. In the book, Black Boy, Richard shows how he progressively became independent in his writings. He never had a real relationship with anyone, so he never knew what it was like to rely on anyone …

…For instance, this quote, “...with the exception of one year at the church school, each time I had begun a new school term something would happen to disrupt it.” (pg. 123). This quote shows how Richard was moving around so much that he never could get a friend, supporting my idea that this is why he became independent. He didn’t have time for anyone . That he couldn’t be held back by anyone or anything.
