Bob Dylan Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota. He taught himself how to play the piano and guitar and liked writing poems. He grew up listening to the music of Elvis, Little Richard, Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie. While he was in college he changed his name to Bob Dylan because he thought it sounded cool. …heaven’s door” became a hit. In 1979 he became a born again Christian and released Christian songs to poor reviews. He returned to non-Christian music and his reviews improved. In 1997 Dylan was honored at the Kennedy Center for Artistic excellence and in 2001 won an academy award for best song, “Things Have Changed.” Bob Dylan has been writing songs and performing for 40 years. He wanted to become a professional musician – I think he got his wish.
