The Buffalo Soldiers On the third day of August, 1866, Gen. Phillip Sheridan, commander of the military division of the Gulf of Mexico, was assigned the duty of creating a regiment of “colored” cavalry. This would be designated the 9th regiment, and would be the beginning of a storied history involving the Buffalo Soldiers. (Hatch to Pope, February 25, 1880) As you can see, the effort and heart put forward by the Buffalo Soldiers is almost unparalleled in our history. The conditions were seemingly unbearable, their enemies were quite powerful, and their own commanders were even racist. They fought for victory for the country that oppressed them. To me, that’s pretty amazing. God bless the Buffalo Soldiers.
