…has a chat with Phoebe at the end of the story when he is planning to head west, she convinces him to stay in New York, and to go home. And he does. So maybe where Holden really belongs is right where he is. And even though he can’t change the people who are phonies, or escape from them, he can ignore them and just live his life which is probably the best idea.
