Checks and Balances
There are three branches of government that share powers and can partially check the powers of the others. Each branch has different powers and duties assigned to ensure a balanced system and one that is unbiased and fair. 1) Legislature (Congress) 2) Executive (President) 3) Judicial (Courts) I will attempt to explain how each branch can check the others. Legislature Congress can check the president in many different ways. First, they can refuse to pass a bill the
others. For example, the president can try to withhold information from Congress on the grounds of “executive privilege”, and Congress can try to get information by mounting an investigation. The Founders of our government tried to create a republic, by which a government represents the people, but also have a system of checks and balances to provide a “double security”. The different branches will control each other, at the same time be controlled by itself.
