Children During the Great Depression

For children growing up during the Great Depression, life was constant turmoil and grief. They rarely had food or were nourished or protected as the average child today is. Around 250,000 children became homeless, wandering the streets with no place to go and no families to care for them. Rummaging through the garbage was a main source of food for them. …There was no choice, so the children set out to find abnormal jobs, tying loose ends and doing things their parents couldn’t. Children were abandoned and some were left wandering the streets searching for work. The Great Depression took an enormous toll on the quality of life for not only adults and parents, but children as well. Children were forced to grow up before their time and work in attempts to support their families.
