…of his young manhood, Lawrence was not short of female company. In 1908 he moved just south of London where he developed many friendships, mostly with women, and began tentatively to make contact with London’s literary world. All of his early influences are from women striving for independence in a changing world. This bombardment of female influences, along with the lack of many informed male ideas, shaped the writings of this influential and controversial artist.
