Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera Cubism is an attempt to combine three-dimensional sculpture and two-dimensional painting. You have to imagine walking around an object and piecing it together from several different sides in order to decide what the artist is trying to do (Ernest Goldstein). When Diego Rivera painted Zapatista Landscape in 1915 it was mistaken by many critiques to be a work of Picasso, who was a prominent painter of the time. Rivera spent 14 years in Europe studying
and rhythm. The horror of the scene is reinforced by the ministers of the new religion. Rivera joined the the Communist party but when Rivera refused to give in to Stalin’s discipline he was expelled from the party. Yet Rivera remained true to communist ideals, which differed from Stalin’s totalitarianism. At the end of his life he rejoined the communist party. Rivera had an extrodiary range of knowlegde of Mexican art and history.
