Fashion In the Early Twentieth Century No period has shown more rapid change in silhouette of women's fashion than the first 50 years of the twentieth century. Each change of outer fashion was also reflected in the under fashion in order to give women the silhouette and character that fashion demanded, sometimes in contradiction to that nature intended. Technology advancements led to greater activity for women outside the home and new materials available for clothing, shifts that were also reflected in fashions. As women gained the right to vote and gradually improved their legal position and economic status, their clothes expressed these changes as well. In all these respects, fashion is, and will continue to be, symbolic of societal changes in women’s roles.
