Ferdinand de Saussure

Ferdinand de Saussure was born in Geneva in 1857. He got trained as a historical linguist, published detailed analyses of Indo-European languages lectured at Paris and Geneva and also taught courses on synchronic linguistics. He died in 1913 and he is now recognised as the father of modern linguistics. Paradigmatic and Syntagmatic are used in teaching. Syntagmatic will teach students learning English, the order of words in a sentence e.g. Subject, Verb, Object. Paradigmatic will teach students the different tenses of verbs in English (e.g. past, present, future) and different forms of words (e.g. singular and plural).
