Figuring Out Luck In “The Rocking-Horse Winner,” by D.H. Lawrence luck is thought to be the controlling factor of people’s lives. Throughout a person’s life luck is the only controlling factor in this story. Paul is the major character in this story. Trough the story he considers himself lucky. While referring to luck Paul’s mother says, “It’s what causes you to have money. If you’re lucky you have money” (…

…be lucky or unlucky it could be hard to determine until that life has been lived. Oscar thinks Paul is lucky because he says, “ but, poor devil, poor devil, he’s best gone out of a life where he rides his rocking-horse to find a winner” (par. 244). Oscar in these last few words shows that Paul is lucky. Oscar shows more compassion for Paul than anyone else in this last sentence of “The Rocking-Horse Winner.”
