The South welcomed the blacks' attempt to be equal, and enjoyed the positive changes that occurred because of it. Once the racial issues settled down in the South, it seemed that this example would follow to the rest of the world. The Changing South certainly changed many people's minds on how things should be done, not how it used to be done.
