Great Gatsby - Corruption

In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald utilized characterization in order to expose the corruption of the inhabitants of East Egg. Three inhabitants of "the wasteland": Tom, Myrtle, and Daisy are depicted as self-absorbed aristocrats whose love for themselves by far outweighs their love for each other. The characters from East Egg in The Great Gatsby were indeed a group of self-absorbed aristocrats. Tom, Myrtle, and Daisy will always put themselves before all other matters in order to protect their social status. As Nick puts it, they "smashed things up…and let other people clean up the mess they had made."
