Effects of World War II on Greece The Greek populace desired to stay out of the war in 1940. They did not have a very strong government. At the time it was a monarchal parliament under King Paul II. Greece used much of the initial aid to finance revamping the military. This was done to help form a bulwark against communism. Greece was always under pressure by the communists in Russia to change over, but resisted largely due to the American and British intervention.
