Harriet Tubman
“Harriet Tubman, Conductor on the Underground Railroad” Harriet Tubman was raised and slaved in Tidewater Maryland. They gave her the name of Araminta, Minta, or Minty. Her parents were Harriet Greene, also known as Rit, and Benjamin Ross, also known as Ben. The slaves in Maryland would tell time by the sun; sun up, sun high, sun down. There years were not divided by months but by seasons; Seedtime, Cotton Blossom time, Harvest, Christmas. The
man heard of this he decided to keep going. On her trips back to Philadelphia, even though Harriet knew she was taking a big risk, she brought slaves back to free them. In 1857, she brought her old parents, and, as they were too old to walk, she was obliged to hire a wagon. In 1860, Harriet took her last trip to Maryland to free an infant. When she arrived back in Philadelphia she decided to stay.
