Heinrich SChliemann Biography

Biography Heinrich Schliemann was a German archaeologist born January 8th, 1822. He was largely self-educated after leaving the local school at the age of fourteen because of scandalous rumours about his father that disabled him from funding his education. By the end of his life Schliemann was familiar with English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Italian, Greek, Latin, Russian, Arabic and Turkish apart from his native German. …but history. This opened a new door to the past. After all, if Homer's Troy could be real, why not Abraham's Ur or Moses' Goshen? In the years following Schliemann's announcement, more than one religious organization began funding digs in the Near East, and whatever truths might lie behind the tales of the past became the subject of dinner-table conversations across the western world. The popularisation of classical archaeology was the result of Schliemann's discovery.
