…major theme in this play. It is Von Berg’s belief that a culture that appreciates art could never be responsible for such atrocities as what the Germans are guilty of. Again Von Berg was proven wrong by Moneau’s claim that Germans made an audience extremely sensitive to the subtleties of a performance. This is another example of the appearance versus reality theme that seems to be woven through the entirety of this work.
