JOHN PAUL JONES John Paul Jones was born on July 6, 1747 right near Kirkcudbright Scotland. He was the first American naval hero. When he said his famous words, “I have not yet begun to fight”; they became famous throughout the world. He became captain of the sloop Ranger in 1777. In France he was given command of the converted merchant the Bonhomme Richard. He was in very poor health and retired in Paris. John Paul Jones died in Paris on July l8, 1792.
