Paradox is often defined as one exhibiting contradictory or inexplicable aspects or qualities. In John Updike’s “A&P”, the character of Sammy personifies this definition perfectly. No longer seen as the good boy, but the foolish hothead, he will be able to grow and mature into the man he is supposed to be without the interference of well-meaning family and friends. He will be able to leave the town of sheep and find a place wrought with the opportunity and excitement he craves.
