John Updike's
Paradox is often defined as one exhibiting contradictory or inexplicable aspects or qualities. In John Updike’s “A&P”, the character of Sammy personifies this definition perfectly. Many have read this seemingly simple short story and reactions over the decade have been quite varied. Reactions to Sammy have run the gamut from romantic hero to lustful, vain youth. His ultimate decision to quit his job has been labeled as everything from heroic and Emersonian, to
snatched up by some high school sweetheart or family friend. By quitting, he has opened up multitudinous paths. No longer seen as the good boy, but the foolish hothead, he will be able to grow and mature into the man he is supposed to be without the interference of well-meaning family and friends. He will be able to leave the town of sheep and find a place wrought with the opportunity and excitement he craves.
