Justice and Mercifulness of God in Anselm
In the world of traditional Christianity (or at least Anselm’s Christianity) there are ultimately three types of people in relation to how God deals with them (save or punish). According to Anselm, people can be good and be saved; they can be wicked and be punished; or they can be wicked and be saved. (Pros. Ch.9) One may pose a question as to why God, perhaps, chooses not to punish some of the good.
question that Christians should not attempt to answer because of humanity’s severe lack of understanding of God’s actions. Humans do not have the capacity to contemplate a suitable basis for God to decide. Whatever He wills is supremely just. Whatever He wills is supremely good. Whatever be His reasoning for punishing some wicked people and saving other equally wicked people, it seems a reasonable, unwavering, and safe intuition to strive to be good.
