A Look at Edmundson After reading Mark Edmundson’s piece, “On the Uses of a Liberal Education,” I have arrived at the conclusion that he is somewhat of an extremist. Although he makes many valid points and states them in a most erudite manner, he crosses what I consider to be a fine line between making a valid point and extending that point to an extreme from which there seems to be no return. Right
it is not within their power to change the way they conduct themselves. The absolute truth of the matter is that Edmundson has nothing of interest left for him in his profession. He doesn’t like his job and dislikes maybe even his life, yet he lacks to motivation to change either. Some may go so far as to say that it is Edmundson and not his students, who have lost interest in his class.
