Without the fire, the boys would have been stranded on that island for who knows how long, and their civilized behavior would drastically decline due to distance and lack of exposure to civilization. Piggy was the symbol of common sense and logic, and without those things, no civilization can thrive. He was the goodness of the group and suffered for it. However, while he was alive he made a drastic difference in many things.
