Macbeth - Analysis of Act 5 scene 1
Analysis of Act 5 scene 1 – The Sleepwalking Scene Performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company 1978 Produced by Trevor Nunn Featuring Judi Dench as Lady Macbeth In this scene the stage is set with a black background to create an eerie atmosphere for the viewers. Everyone is dressed in black, which creates the impression of evil and darkness being present in this scene. With the exception, of course, of the nun (gentlewoman) who has white on the headpiece
came from, symbolising her entry into eternal darkness and torment. In conclusion I believe this to be an exceptionally convincing performance by Judi Dench. She delivers Lady Macbeth’s character in such a way that we cannot help but feel sorry for her. This play was directed so that the atmosphere is constantly tense and eerie and due to the lack of props and scenery the audience’s full attention is always on the characters.
