It has long been debated whether in the play “Medea,” Medea was attempting vengeance or justice on Jason. In order to have this argument, you must first find out what vengeance is and what justice is. Vengeance is the act of revenge, getting back someone who has wronged you. Justice is fairness, the act of setting something or someone equal. Therefore, the real argument is whether Jason has committed more wrongs to Medea than Medea …

…when he said, “Exult in evil, gloat your fill, have your glory!” (Medea 287) You do not get personal glory from justice, you get personal glory from vengeance. Medea caused Jason more pain then Jason could have ever caused her. If Medea achieved justice, Jason and her would be equal, but they aren’t near that. Medea has a life now, when Jason has nothing.
